Independent Adoption Center Offers Praise for “Sesame Street” Adoption Episode: Children’s Show on PBS Highlights November as “National Adoption Month 28 November 2006 – Pleasant Hill, CA. Independent Adoption Center, the nationally recognized nonprofit education and counseling agency, has offered high marks to this month’s “Sesame Street” episode highlight adoption noting that November is National Adoption Month. “Adoption and Sesame Street are a wonderful combination to explain one of the many ways families are formed”, said Ann Wrixon, Executive Director of the Independent Adoption Center. “I applaud Sesame Street for their recent show on adoption. The message that adoption is for everyone, whether someone chooses international or domestic adoption, that you can be single or a couple, helps ‘normalize’ adoption for children, as well as for adults. The Independent Adoption Center, celebrating 25 years of open adoptions in 2007, is deeply aware the education and counseling provided to our adopting parents and birthparents means our children grow up feeling whole and complete.” Starting this month, IAC began issuing monthly fact sheets as an education vehicle for the media and general public. A pioneer in establishing open adoption, Independent Adoption Center (IAC) is nationally recognized as a leader in the field having facilitated almost 4,000 successful adoptions in 35 states. Headquartered in the Northern California town of Pleasant Hill, IAC has southern California offices in Los Angeles, and also operates centers in Indiana, North Carolina and Georgia. IAC will celebrate its 25 anniversary with a gala benefit in May 2007. “With November as National Adoption Month, this is a perfect time to help dispel many of the myths and mis-perceptions about open adoption,” said Wrixon, herself the mother of an adopted child. “Domestic adoptions are on the rise in the United States. In fact, placements have increased by 8% in the last five years.”
As a nonprofit organization, the IAC’s mission is to create open adoptions: that is, a completely voluntary adoption where birth parents select the family they want to adopt their child. It is a viable and accessible alternative to untimely pregnancy throughout the United States. IAC provides free monthly adoption information sessions at all their locations in Pleasant Hill and Los Angeles, CA, Indianapolis, IN, Atlanta, GA and Raleigh, NC.
